Clavicle Fracture (ORIF)

CAUSES

  • Trauma

SYMPTOMS

  • Pain
  • Bruising
  • Deformity
  • Lack of shoulder function

PREOP

  • X-ray
  • Occasional CT scan, evaluate fracture pattern and severity

RECOVERY

  • 10 days suture removal
  • 2 weeks sling
  • 2 months physical therapy 2 x per week.
  • Expectation is full range of motion and no pain with return to full activity. Sports by 8 weeks.

TECHNIQUE

The shoulder is fixed with a special plate and screws designed specifically for the clavicle

DAY OF SURGERY

  • General anesthesia
  • 90 minute surgery
  • Outpatient

WHEN TO HAVE SURGERY?

  • Fracture displacement necessitates surgery for shoulder function
  • Patient is athlete who desires expeditious return to sport

COMPLICATIONS

  • Rare. 5-10% of patients request plate out after surgery.
