Arthroscopic Superior Labrum Repair (SLAP Repair)

CAUSES

  • Traumatic injury to the shoulder
  • Overuse, especially in overhead athletes

SYMPTOMS

  • Pain
  • Shoulder pain with overhead activity
  • Reduced performance of shoulder in sports

PREOP

  • X-ray
  • MRI Scan--Evaluate Labrum, sometimes contrast is used.

RECOVERY

  • 10 days suture removal
  • 3 weeks sling
  • 4- 6 months physical therapy 2 x per week.
  • Expectation is excellent range of motion and minimal to no pain with return to full activity

TECHNIQUE

The labrum is reattached using sutures and suture anchors using arthroscopic techniques of small incisions using a camera

DAY OF SURGERY

  • Nerve block anesthesia
  • 1-2 hour surgery
  • Outpatient

WHEN TO HAVE SURGERY?

  • Significant tear on MRI
  • Poor shoulder function
  • Poor performance of shoulder in sports
  • Failed physical therapy
