AC Joint Separation AC Joint Reconstruction

CAUSES

  • Trauma

SYMPTOMS

  • Pain
  • Bruising
  • Deformity, clavicle is protruding
  • Lack of shoulder function

PREOP

  • X-ray
  • Rarely need MRI

RECOVERY

  • 10 days suture removal
  • 4 weeks sling
  • 4 months physical therapy 2 x per week.
  • Expectation is full range of motion and no pain with return to full activity. Sports by 4 months.

TECHNIQUE

The clavicle is fixed back into place using a combination of a synthetic device and an allograft either open or arthroscopically

DAY OF SURGERY

  • Nerve block anesthesia
  • 2 hour surgery
  • Outpatient

WHEN TO HAVE SURGERY?

  • Type one and two separations aree treated without surgery
  • Type 3 separations are controversial. Dr. Gamradt favors a trial of conservative treatment for 3 months prior to surgery
  • Type 4 and 5 separations are severe and usually treated with immediate surgery.

COMPLICATIONS

  • 5-10%: recurrence of deformity, infection, fracture
